Abdominal hernia surgery

Abdominal hernia is a condition where a hernia sac containing intra-abdominal structures, most often an intestinal loop or intra-abdominal fat, is pushed through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. Based on the location, we distinguish inguinal hernia, thigh, umbilical, ventral, in the scar after a previous surgery or the so-called diastasis (separation) of the rectus abdominis muscles. Hernias often cause problems – pain during load, intestinal dysfunction, hernia sac arching. The procedure closes this defective place in the abdominal wall.

Procedure indication

Almost every abdominal hernia requires a surgery. Exceptions include umbilical hernia in young children (which may close spontaneously), a small umbilical hernia in adults (unless it grows and causes problems) and large abdominal hernias in very old or seriously ill people (the risk of surgery may be too great).

Form of intervention

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and requires several days to a week of hospitalisation.

Method and course of procedure

During the procedure, the hernia sac is exposed up to the neck of the hernia and the hernia gate. The hernia bag is removed, the contents of the hernia are returned to the abdominal cavity and the hernia is sutured in several layers. It is sometimes necessary to use a synthetic material (mesh) during the procedure to ensure the closure of the defect in the abdominal wall is strong enough.

Postoperative course and recommendations

Mild to moderate pain is common after the procedure. The sutures are removed approximately 2 weeks after the procedure, the convalescence period is approximately 4-10 weeks depending on the extent of the procedure. A resting regimen is usually necessary for three months.

Method of payment

The procedure is fully covered by health insurance.

All plastic surgeons perform these surgical procedures at our facility.
